We chose Virgin Atlantic for a Paris-Tokyo flight in July 2013 mainly for reasons of price and convenience: €680 for a return flight. Only Aeroflot offers cheaper tickets, but that involves a mandatory 15 hours stopover in Moscow.

The Paris-London flight was operated by British Airways. Based on a very unpleasant experience with Finnair last year on a Paris-New York flight, I wasn't expecting a high standard. But it was the reverse of what I expected.

The seats were especially wide and comfortable (bearing in mind we were in economy class). The staff were very welcoming, friendly and attentive (both on the ground and in the air). The food was of a high standard, and there was lots to entertain you. The twelve hours of the flight didn't seem that long to me. There were no problems collecting the baggage, and the flight was on time. I recommend this airline and will definitely use them again if I can.

Good airline

Both the outgoing and returning flights were on time, already a very good point. No problem with baggage, even during the transit between two terminals in the huge London airport.
Flight attendants were smiling and helpful. Meals and snacks on board were adequate; we had the choice between a Western meal and a Japanese one. A "night" of around 6-8 hours passed during the flight.
Leg room was rather extensive, even for larger people, and the seats were rather comfortable.
Blanket, cushion, and headphones were furnished.
Entertainment was numerous and varied.
A small drawback on the return trip (from Haneda on August 6, 2013): it was really cold in the plane. Since I was only wearing Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt, and a blanket was not furnished, I found it intolerable. And the TV screens were a little old with far fewer choices than on our outgoing trip.
Overall, I am satisfied. I'll use this airline again in the future.

You don't have time to become bored

With Virgin Atlantic, there's no reason to become bored during the ten or so hours of the flight.
There's a screen at every seat for the passengers (unlike with Air France), and it allows each person to choose the entertainment they wish, whether that means just watching the flight map to find out which country you're flying over, watching fairly recent films (there's about 100 available, with the number of different language subtitling / dubbing options available depending on the film; there are also episodes from TV series, you can listen to music, and you can even play games such as Bejeweled or Battleships (if my memory serves me correctly) and even play against any other passenger on the flight (you just have to enter their seat number). In short, you don't have time to become bored during the flight.

When faced with a choice between several airlines, I recommend this one to you, and it's still a lot less expensive and less austere than airlines such as Air France.
