Average flight with an average airline

Review of florentb about the flight United Airlines between Vancouver and Frankfurt on 02/11/2013 in Economy

Note: This review is about an experience that happened more than 3 years ago.

Boarded at Vancouver Airport's US terminal, boarding pass + luggage tag printed via a self-service kiosk then baggage deposited on a giant conveyor belt.

The employees are only there to help you use the kiosks or find your way around the airport. This type of treatment seems to be more and more the norm with airlines from North America. Straight through US customs at the terminal at Vancouver.

A 4h flight between YVR and ORD (Chicago) on an A320 with no personal TV, nor WiFi, but a Disney film projected on screens attached to the ceiling. An interesting technical feature provided by United: if you plug in headphones and select a particular channel you can listen in to the radio communications. The seats are standard size, quite narrow in other words. You have to pay to eat: only non-alcoholic drinks are included free.

Arrived at a small and fairly uninteresting terminal (apart from the McDonald's and the Duty Free) at ORD then boarded the 767-300 for the second leg of the voyage between ORD and FRA (Frankfort).

The seats are in a 2-3-2 configuration and quite narrow. They are equipped with small, personal screens offering a wide choice of films, music, series, etc., in several languages.

The food they serve is of average quality, though not inedible nonetheless. Alcoholic drinks have to be paid for in economy class with many of the US airlines.

The cabin crew are very willing to serve, regularly passing amongst the seats to see if water or snacks are required. United's Duty Free shop is quite good.

Arrived at the (giant) Star Alliance Terminal at FRA ahead of schedule.

In conclusion, the quality standards of the US airlines are significantly inferior to those of certain European airlines such as Lufthansa, SWISS or even Air France. But that did not hold any unpleasant surprises for me; I was not expecting impeccable service.
