After my meeting on Friday evening in Bangkok, I decided to spend the weekend at Naka Island, off the Phuket coast (or rather my personal travel agent organized a weekend at Naka for me).
The plane for the TG (Thai Airways) morning flight between Bangkok and Phuket was a Jumbo 747. The disadvantage: boarding was noisy and disorderly, with a race to see who could go to the greatest excess between the foreign tourists, who arrived wearing winter coats, and the local, Saturday morning tourists, who were going to spend the weekend at the beach.
The advantage: you can travel on the upper deck, almost like onboard a premium private jet.
The plane wasn't new at all. The shell seats don't recline to the horizontal or fully flat, but you get the benefit of the full range of services on a flight of one hour: welcome drink, hot towel, hot meal (in the Thai manner: chicken and boiled rice for breakfast at 7:00 am in the morning; or alternatively coffee and croissants), cushion and purple blanket, priority boarding, and priority baggage too.
The price is very competitive, with the difference between economy and business negligible. However, I strongly advise choosing a seat on the upper deck, with the ones on the lower deck offering much less privacy. And I don't think this flight will often be on time because it waits for connecting flights from Europe: on the morning in question there was a delay of 40 minutes.
