CDG-DOH - traditional perfection

Review of AirNapoleon about the flight Qatar Airways QR40 between Paris Charles De Gaulle and Doha on 31/01/2014 in Business

Note: This review is about an experience that happened more than 3 years ago.

Flight from Charles de Gaulle to Doha in Business class. As always the Qatar service was very refined - in the image of a dressing table - and comprises a whole ceremony in itself, with tablecloth, napkin folded into a triangle, then bread plate, each piece of cutlery one by one, salt and pepper, and lastly the glasses.

The business seats on the Qatar A340 are less roomy than on the 777: they lie fully flat but not fully horizontal, yet they do nonetheless go low enough to avoid the toboggan effect. And the little tablet in front of the screen is really practical. The screen is big with a wide choice of films, but the navigation of the in-flight entertainment on the A340 isn't always as intuitive as other equipment, and the film didn't stop for every public address announcement.

A special mention must be given to the excellent red onion soup (I always appreciate soup on a plane); to the ability to request food or drink at any given time; and to the tea/coffee containers (with a goblet for café viennois). It should also be noted that the hot towels were given on a little black dish to avoid burning yourself with a boiling hot towel in the face like some other airlines.

Another positive point to mention is that boarding was via a special gate and bridge, even if check-in was a bit painful since a new rule, which has no added value, requires the presentation of an e-ticket on paper or screen, when a passport should suffice.

The only negative point was the departure lounge, pompously called 'Air France Premier'. Without doubt it is La Première standard for Air France (with little apple cakes and a 'wide' choice of sandwiches as shown in the photo below) but well below the standard of the rest of the service. Qatar, however, makes up for it with a premium terminal at Doha where champagne is served straight to you, there's a panini stall in the evenings, and where one can take a shower and get big squashy slippers for the next flight.

If your flight leaves Paris late, you get the opportunity to enjoy more time in the Air France lounge :-{ - the arrival at Doha is closest to the terminal to avoid the usual 20 minute minibus tour of the runway.

  • Salon Air France Première, vivement que Qatar ait son propre salon
  • Cabine Business A340 Qatar
  • La mini-tablette devant l'écran et l'espace de rangement associé, très pratique et bien pensé
  • Apéritif - homard et champagne
