Nice boutique!

Review of AirNapoleon about the flight Bangkok Airways PG276 between Phuket and Bangkok on 16/12/2013 in Economy

Note: This review is about an experience that happened more than 3 years ago.

Bangkok Airways defines itself as Asia’s “boutique airline” and its approach is really nice and customer-oriented. Colorful planes, a singing and dancing crew that welcomes passengers aboard (in a video), lounge access for everyone, onboard meal even on short flights… And all of this if simplicity and efficacy.

To me, the airline seems to be very pro. After my Bangkok Airlines flight, I had to take a long flight with Emirates from Dubai to Paris. Even though I had bought the tickets separately, when checking my bags I asked the agent to tag them to my final destination. She complied with a smile, thus freeing me from having to worry about my baggage while in Bangkok.

The airline is also very serious on keeping its promises. Since I had tagged my bags to another country, and so that I would not lose time at BKK’s border control, I went on the international CIQ (Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine) circuit already from Phuket. This means that I went through passport control and boarded from an international terminal already at Phuket, even if I was taking a domestic flight. This is normal in Thailand, and is managed with the use of colored stickers. Of course, the stickers identify you as a stupid vacationing tourist, but it is practical.

Bangkok Airways had promised access to the lounge for everyone, and I wondered how this would work out. Their flights are mostly domestic, and the lounge is therefore situated at the domestic terminal. It turns out they also had a bar among the international terminal’s seats, where they served coffee, orange juice, or something to snack on upon presentation of the ticket!

Anyway, it’s an airline that wants to present itself as being on the passenger’s side. I am still impressed by the efficacy of the onboard service, which included a generous meal served during a one-hour flight, with orange juice, tea, and coffee being available all the time (although I was expecting a hot meal as in the Bangkok-Koh Samui flight and they gave me a cold one). It should be noted that they had 5 flight attendants for an A320, and on top of that they are amazingly able to be at all corners of the plane at the same time!

To sum it up, I recommend this nice airline after a comfortable and almost on-time flight.

It should also be noted the simplicity with which Qatar’s accompanist (the person who leads the frequent fliers from the check-in counter to the airline’s lounge) invited me to join two friends who were taking a flight to Phuket at the same time. Even though I was wearing a Bangkok Airways/Emirates sticker, he let me benefit along with them from a fast track and a VIP passport control. Beautiful business intelligence!
