A night flight to Dubai
This was the third time I'd flown on this KLM flight, a quite convenient service because it means you arrive in Dubai early in the morning: most European airlines schedule their Dubai flights during the day with a late evening arrival and return at night. On the first occasion I was in economy class on a B777, the second time in business class on an A330, and this time it was business class again but in an old-fashioned MD11.
I'm always pleased with the lounge at Amsterdam, with its views over the runways: it has comfortable seats, a reasonable hot-meal service, views over the runways, a large smoking room, and the convenience of clean showers.
About the seat on the MD11: sleeping is better if it's not reclined to the maximum, allowing a slight raising of the seat's base to prevent sliding.
The dinner service is fairly limited (it's not possible to choose the starter or dessert) despite it being a tray meal. The breakfast was better.
The hostesses are very helpful and always provide a personalised service in my experience. Part of the service is the taking of the breakfast order just after dinner to allow the maximum amount of sleeping time. No untimely announcements were made during the whole flight, with the cabin always silent in this respect, but the aircraft itself was quite noisy all the same.
In summary, this flight offered convenience in scheduling terms, good service, a good waiting lounge, and let's not forget the collectable model house they present you with. It offers an alternative to the Gulf airlines, despite the service levels and seat comfort limitations. Since this flight was taken a year ago, I think the MD11s have been retired from service and some of the aircraft now have a refurbished business class section.
