Review of siamchang about the flight Gulf Air between Bahrain and Bangkok on 01/11/2007 in Economy

On the forums at the time Gulf Air was top of the list of airlines not recommended for travel to Thailand. I chose them because of the very affordable price of 604 euros. Entertainment-wise: personal screens on the Paris-Bahrain flight, but no choice of films, just six showing across six channels, each on a loop. Food acceptable. Very nice goody bag. Very, very slow service, hostesses a little haughty. Same thing for the Bahrain Bangkok, except the personal screens had vanished – screens shared by several people at once and showing a pre-selected film. No problems with the stopover, except that it was very long, around eight hours, and the airport in Bahrain is a bit shabby. With the return flight the stopover was extended to over nine hours (the airline had warned about this well before), and hotel, tax and dinner were laid on (passports confiscated though, and the staff were a bit sinister – a shock compared to Thailand). In summary, tolerable enough.

I used GF from Bangkok to London and return. Had a huge amount of help and support from the office in Bangkok, but after that it was pretty unremarkable. Gulf Air has fallen a lot since its hay day in the 1980s. The food and service on board left a lot to be desired. They arranged a hotel for me in Manama during a prolonged stopover. It cost more than $50.00. The plane was delightfully empty on the return leg to Bahrain, so there was lots of space. The layover in Bahrain was just over three hours. The airport is quite depressing and the Irish Pub something out of a Dickensian fiction. I do have to say there seems to be a competition amongst the pilots as to who can do the smoothest landing. You did a good job lads.
