Review of SBG about the flight Ryanair between London Gatwick and Dublin on 21/01/2019 in Economy

I’ll explain why, I was planning a 3 week European vacation for a family of 5 (including myself), I initially chose Ryanair because the tickets were $14 from London to Dublin, $17 from Dublin to Prague, and $14 from Prague to Paris, it sounded like a good deal so I got them. The problem is they charge for every little tiny thing! They say you can bring one carry on, but it’s limited in size (which makes sense) but it can only be the size of a really small purse or briefcase, so if you want to bring an average size carry on, you have to pay an extra $40 per person! And checking a bag is even more expensive. So even though you think your paying $14 for a flight, you actually pay $55.
That’s not a terrible price for a ticket but it was the way it was presented online that annoyed me.
But here’s the thing that really made our 3 flights terrible, we have a family of 5, 3 adults and 2 kids, one over and one under 16.
So our first Ryanair flight (London Gatwick To Dublin) we get there about 2 1/2 hours early, I walk up to the Ryanair desk and say we’d like to check in, and the lady said you have to check online, so I get started on my phone, I’m 3/5 of the way done and it kicks me out, I go ask the lady at the desk and she says “Oh yeah, check in is canceled 2 hours before the flight” No one told me that, so now we have to go to another desk to pay to get our boarding passes, and they charged us £60 (~$80) per ticket, this really made us mad because nobody told us we had to check in 2 hours ahead of time, and the way Ryanair took care of it was not good.
So then the second flight (Dublin to Prague), I try to check in ahead of time on my phone but it won’t let me finish the last person, apparently you can’t check in people under 16 online (this makes no sense to me and causes lots of frustration) so just to be safe we get there 3 hours early, I go to the front desk, and request to check in, she tells me I have to check in online, I explain that I tried but it wouldn’t let me because she’s under 16. To make a long story/rant short, we got really frustrated with the system and how we all couldn’t check in just because one person is under 16, it eventually worked out but only 15 mins before the 2 hour dead line where we would have to pay that huge fee again.
And the 3rd flight (Prague to Paris), same annoying process, to be safe we get there 3 1/2 hours early, I go up to the counter and I kindly explain to the man at the counter that she’s under 16, and what’s the easiest way to check in for her, he was super nice, he went on my phone and just changed her age so that she was 1 year older and the system accepted her, although it was much easier that way, it was technically a lie, and why does it have to be so complicated to check in someone under 16?!?!
On top of all this I’m mainly annoyed with the way they handle their business, they want to charge for EVERYTHING! They website/app is full of so many adds/up sells that you can’t navigate it. The whole flight they try sell you stuff, $13 small sandwiches and super expensive perfumes, it’s an hour sales pitch. And last but most certainly not least the most annoying thing of all to me, even though we were on flights with plenty of empty seats/rows, they have each person sit by themselves unless you pay extra, so on all 3 flights, all 5 of us were sitting alone, when we could have very, very easily sat together.
All in all I thought we would pay around $225 for all our flights, but with fees and extras we payed $1,270.
DO NOT fly Ryanair, it’ll be a cheaper and much nicer flight to just pay what seems to be a little extra for the initial ticket, but trust me, it’s worth it!
