My girlfriend and I checked in online after seeing the e-mail from Air France inviting us to do so. Since we did not have a printer, we could not print our e-tickets, but we were still able to change our seats to the front of the cabin. When we bought our tickets, actually, the only places left were in the back.

Arriving at the airport, we headed to the check in counter where two American Air France agents welcomed us and explained the check-in and baggage drop-off procedures. We were able to print our tickets with no difficulties at the self-service check-in kiosk. It is worth mentioning, though, that of the six kiosks, one was out of service.

Despite the crowd that wanted to check their baggage, we did not have to wait too long, thanks to a large and efficient crew. This is no doubt an American particularity, because on the outward trip, at Roissy, check-in took considerably longer.

Boarding was announced at 8:30 PM, but the departure was 30 minutes late. We finally boarded at 8:45 PM. We were lucky to be among the first to board the plane – the waiting line behind us was very long. The boarding procedure for the A380 is not very easy and could benefit from some improvements.

For some reason I ignore there was a problem with the jet bridge. We could not board from the lower bridge as is usually done, so we had to use the upper one instead. That said, this allowed us to see the A380’s upper bridge and the famous staircase that I had never had the opportunity to go down before.

Once at our seats, the A380 creates a real feeling of space, especially for the seat by the window. The seats are more comfortable and the screen on the seat is of better quality than the one of the outward flight’s A330. There were many flight attendants to welcome and guide us in the cabin and the captain showed us where our seat was. After some time, we began our taxi to the take-off runway. As is often the case at JFK, this took a while. The take-off, though, was perfect, and our impression was confirmed again: you don’t feel anything in the A380!

For the first meal, we had a choice of ravioli with goat cheese or chicken with whole-grain mustard. The options were presented in a beautiful menu in the colors of the 80 years of Air France. My girlfriend ordered the ravioli and I, the chicken. The chicken was excellent and the sauce was very good. This goes to show how airplane food is not necessarily bad. Dinner was plentiful, with this main dish, a starter, bread, cheese, a compote, and a brownie – all accompanied by a wide choice of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages (including champagne). During the meal, we asked the flight attendants for several refills and they were always very responsive and helpful. After the meal, the cabin got silent and the lights were turned off.

After a short rest (the flight only takes 6 hours and 5 minutes), we were woken up for breakfast by a lighting effect unique to Air France’s A380. Breakfast was very good, including a muffin, cottage cheese, orange juice, tea, coffee, and a glass of water.

Landing came quickly and went with no hassle. The cabin quickly emptied and our walk to the airport was very fast. We took less than an hour between landing and getting on the RER train. We were among the first passengers to pass by the border police and arrived at the baggage claim to find our baggage already on the carousel. How nice it is when you don’t have to wait for your baggage!

To sum it up, service in the flight was in general very good, with extra points to the food, which was excellent, plentiful, and well presented in what seems to be Air France’s new tableware.
